Safety at level crossings

Awareness campaign in Heisdorf

CFL makes safety its highest priority. To this end, CFL, in cooperation with the Grand Ducal Police and Road Safety Luxembourg, will organise an awareness campaign at the Heisdorf level crossing on Wednesday, 9 June 2026.

As interfaces between road and rail traffic, level crossings require particular vigilance to prevent dangerous situations and ensure the safety of all users.

A few simple rules can help prevent accidents:

  • Stop as soon as the red warning lights begin flashing or an audible signal is activated.
  • Do not enter a level crossing unless you can clear it completely.
  • If your vehicle becomes trapped within the danger zone, drive through the barriers to clear the tracks immediately.
  • In the event of an incident on the tracks, leave the danger zone without delay and call the emergency services on 112.

Despite these clear safety rules, incidents continue to occur. Over recent years, several collisions and near misses have been recorded, putting those involved at risk and causing significant disruption to rail services.

Alongside awareness-raising activities, CFL continues to invest in measures to enhance safety, notably through the gradual elimination of level crossings. Since 2012, more than 40 level crossings have been removed in cooperation with institutional partners.

CFL also carries out prevention and education initiatives aimed at younger audiences, particularly in schools, to promote safe behaviour around railway infrastructure from an early age.

These initiatives form part of a broader commitment to safety and serve as a reminder that everyone can contribute by following the rules and adopting safe behaviour at level crossings.

An additional benefit is improved service quality: when journeys are completed safely and without incident, rail operations become more reliable, helping to improve punctuality and the overall robustness of the network.
