New CFL trains being tested on the North Line

New CFL trains being tested

Between 29 April and 1 July 2024, the CFL will be making ad hoc adjustments to its services after 23:00 to speed up the commissioning of their new trains.

While the tests for the approval of the 34 "Coradia High Stream Capacity" railcars have been completed in a three-car configuration (single unit), the tests for their deployment in multiple units with six or nine cars (accommodating more than 1,000 passengers in a single train) will be carried out from Monday 29 April 2024 on the northern line.

In order to execute these tests, some trains will have to be selectively cancelled after 11pm between 29 April and 1 July 2024 on the northern line, more specifically on the Luxembourg – Diekirch, Kautenbach – Wiltz and Luxembourg – Troisvierges routes.

The reduction in rail services to/from the north of the country can be explained by the specific test environment required to check the compatibility of the new equipment with the rail infrastructure, in particular the electrical power supply system (including the overhead line).

"In order to collect reliable data, we have to carry out these tests without any other rail vehicles using the same overhead line on the section in question declared as test section," explains Mike Strotz, Project Manager for the introduction of the Coradia Stream High Capacity at the CFL.

"As a result, the tests are being carried out at night, away from regular passenger train traffic. The fact that some trains will be withdrawn during low-traffic hours will give the CFL and its supplier ALSTOM the time it needs to carry out the tests and bring the new rolling stock into service more quickly.

During the test period, the CFL will make replacement buses available to its customers concerned by a cancelled train. For further information on the dates of the tests and the alternative services provided, please check www.cfl.lu or the CFL mobile application.

More seats, more comfort

As a reminder, the gradual commissioning of the 34 new railcars ordered from ALSTOM in 2018 will enable CFL to offer 46% more seats by 2025-2026. In addition, the older-generation 2000 series ("Z2") railcars will gradually be replaced, significantly increasing the level of comfort on board the trains (air conditioning, Wi-Fi on board, USB-C sockets, more bicycle spaces).

The new trains will be put into service as single units (three cars) in the first half of 2024, pending completion of the tests and commercial service in a configuration of six or even nine cars (multiple units) in the first half of 2025.
