rails autumn works

We are working for your mobility of tomorrow

Replacement of 20 switches between Luxembourg and Pétange

  • Train offer adapted or interrupted from 14 March to 04 April 2025

  • A replacement service by train and bus will be put in place

In order to maintain the rail network and guarantee safety and comfort for all their customers and staff, the CFL will be replacing twenty switches between 14 March and 04 April 2025 between Luxembourg and Pétange on the Luxembourg - Bascharage-Sanem - Rodange - Athus and Longwy lines respectively. This work completes the preventive replacement, on these same lines, of around 10,000 concrete sleepers in November 2024.

As a result, train services on the Luxembourg - Bascharage-Sanem - Rodange - Athus and Longwy lines will be disrupted or interrupted between 14 March and 04 April 2025. During the various phases of the works, the CFL will provide a replacement service by bus or by train and bus. This replacement service takes into account passenger feedback from the work carried out on these lines in 2024.

Given the works already scheduled for the Easter holidays and the availability of third party contractors, it will not be possible to replace the switches between Luxembourg and Pétange during the school holidays, which are usually the preferred period for maintenance work due to reduced demand.

All trains on the Luxembourg - Bascharage - Sanem - Rodange - Athus respectively Longwy line will be replaced by buses during the weekends from:

  • 15 to 16 March 2025,
  • 22 to 23 March 2025,
  • 29 to 30 March 2025.
The buses serve all the localities served by the train lines concerned. Timetables are available in the timetable search at www.cfl.lu and in the CFL mobile and Mobiliteit.lu applications.

No trains on the Luxembourg - Bascharage-Sanem - Pétange route: the CFL are offering an alternative train service from Rodange station:

  • Friday 14 March 2025,
  • Friday 21 March 2025,
  • from Monday 24 March to Friday 28 March 2025,
  • Monday 31 March to Friday 4 April 2025.

Passengers from Longwy will be able to travel to Luxembourg Station (and vice versa):

  • Either with one of the two additional direct trains between Longwy and Luxembourg via Esch/Alzette (departure from Longwy at 05:46 and 06:20).
  • Or by combining two trains: the train from Longwy to Rodange and then the Rodange - Esch/Alzette - Luxembourg train (journey time extended by around 20 minutes). Additional Rodange - Esch/Alzette - Luxembourg trains will be introduced during peak hours to reinforce this line.

Passengers from Athus will be able to reach Luxembourg Station (and vice versa) by:

  • combining two trains: a train from Athus to Rodange and then the Rodange - Esch/Alzette - Luxembourg train (extending the journey by around 20 minutes). Additional Rodange – Esch/Alzette - Luxembourg trains will be provided during peak hours.

A replacement bus service is also planned between Pétange and Luxembourg (L70 bus). The timetable for these buses is available in the timetable search on www.cfl.lu or in the CFL mobile or Mobiliteit.lu applications.

Adaptation of the direct evening train between Luxembourg and Volmerange-les-Mines and certain trains on the Luxembourg - Thionville - Metz line

To accommodate the extra trains being introduced on the Luxembourg - Esch/Alzette - Rodange line, the direct train between Luxembourg and Volmerange-les-Mines (scheduled to depart from Luxembourg at 17:26) will only run between Bettembourg and Volmerange-les-Mines. On the Luxembourg - Metz - Thionville line, some trains will be cancelled.

Well prepared thanks to the CFL passenger information

For more details on the traffic adjustments and additional services during the works, we recommend that our customers consult the timetable search and details of the transport plan at www.cfl.lu and in the CFL mobile and Mobilitéit.lu applications. Staff at stations and trains, as well as at the CFL Call Centre, will be happy to provide any information you may require.

As the work is being carried out outside a school holiday period, the secondary schools mainly affected have been informed in order to relay the message to their school community.

Despite these major adaptation efforts, and the replacement trains and buses on offer, the CFL is encouraging their customers to make arrangements and take advantage of public transport alternatives.

For safety reasons, we would also ask our customers who are cyclists not to take their bicycles on board the trains during the works in question. Customers wishing to cycle to their departure station can use one of the many secure bikeboxes located in the immediate vicinity of our stations free of charge (more information at www.bikebox.lu).

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

The CFL teams and their external partners have been working hard for several years to ensure that customers are offered an even better service in the future and that the railway is fit for the future.

Some of these video reports give you a simple insight into the various projects and their purpose. One thing is certain: we are working for your mobility of tomorrow.
