The new viaduct, the new single-track tunnel north of Luxembourg Station and the related facilities at Central Station are designed with the aim of eliminating the bottleneck located in the northern sector of the Central Station. Train flows along the northern line will be separated from train on the Wasserbillig line. This solution has the advantage of ensuring a smooth flow of traffic passing through the northern part of Luxembourg Station, in particular by eliminating the intersection located there, which is reached by switches on the viaduct itself.

The project is consists of three engineering works:

  • 100 meter long tunnel under the Boulevard d’Avranches: the existing road, which is located at the northern exit of the Luxembourg Station, on the right of the Boulevard d'Avranches and above the viaduct, currently encloses two tracks. In the future, the new structure, which supports the boulevards of Boulevard d'Avranches, will have to span four tracks. The future third track is an extension of a siding, located in the tunnel of the Rocade de Bonnevoie;

  • 242 meter long viaduct: the deck of the new viaduct, next to the existing viaduct, is composed of a reinforced concrete slab supporting two new railroad tracks;

  • 275 meter riprap: this riprap allows the extension of the two new tracks laid on the new viaduct to connect to the route of the existing lines from Luxembourg to Wasserbillig.

The commissioning of the three works is scheduled for April 23, 2019.

The project is partially co-financed by the European Union.
