As intersections between rail and road traffic, level crossings can be a source of disruption, in terms of the fluidity of road and rail traffic and therefore the punctuality of trains, and also in terms of safety for road and rail users. These risks are all the greater, in terms of safety and quality of service, due to the increase of frequency of trains and the increase in road traffic.

In order to reduce dangers due to intersections between road and rail traffic as well as to improve traffic flow, the CFL have set themselves the goal of removing level crossings and replacing them with lower or higher crossings for road traffic.

The CFL launched studies for the realisation of level crossing removal projects, often in collaboration with the Administration des Ponts et Chaussées, the communes in question and other administrations in order to improve traffic flow by means of alternative pedestrian and bicycle paths. Only a removed level crossing is a safe level crossing.

The main level crossing removal projects recently completed or under evaluation are located in the communes Kiischpelt, Schieren, Mersch Lorentzweiler, Steinsel, Walferdange, Luxembourg, Mamer, Steinfort, Differdange, Bettembourg, Kayl, Dudelange, Rumelange, Dippach and Contern.
