Bike & Rail - the CFL's cycling strategy

The CFL's " cycling strategy" aims to sustainably optimise the combination of bike-station-train. This is done on several levels, including by adapting and modernising the railway infrastructure (e.g. expanding the network of secure bicycle parking facilities (bike boxes), increasing the number of bicycle spaces on trains (especially during the cycling season), or by adapting the signage at stations to indicate cycle paths, as well as developing a range of services and information specifically for cyclists.

More space on the trains
The CFL have increased the number of bicycle spaces in their trains: 168 spaces are available in the 21 Z2 railcars (2000 series) and 300 spaces in the 20 double-decker coaches (DoSto). In the new Coradia Stream High Capacity railcars, the number will be increased from twelve to 24 in the single units and from 24 to 32 in the multiple units from May to September.

"Bike & Rail": 20 cycling tours from station to station
The CFL published their first book for leisure cyclists: "Bike & Rail" with 20 cycle tours from station to station with different levels of difficulty (15 tours in the Grand Duchy and 5 in the Greater Region).

The bicycle is part of the multimodal transfer platform
All new infrastructure projects take cycling into account, including the recently completed multimodal interchange platform in Mersch (inaugerated in September 2023) with 116 bicycle parking spaces.

Repair kits on the platforms
The "Snack O Quai" vending machines, which have been installed on a large number of platforms at stations and stops since November 2023, contain repair kits for bicycles.

The bikeboxes
The management of the nationwide network of over 70 secure public bicycle parking spaces (mainly near railway stations) has been taken over by the CFL. These infrastructures, now called bikeboxes (formerly mBox), are free and available 24/7. The bikeboxes are gradually being given a new look. Further services for cyclists will follow shortly. Over the next few years, around 20 more bikeboxes will be added to the existing network.
